Sitka Blacktail Deer Hunt, 5 Days

Prices and Availaility

Summary:
Nice 3 x 3 taken in the Alpine August 2004!

Although the Sitka Blacktail is a smaller cousin to the Mule Deer, they are extremely abundant in Southeast Alaska.   Their weight ranges from 60 to 250 pounds, and they have exceptionally keen hearing and sense of smell.

If you are in fairly good physical condition, you may want to consider the early season hunt, which will take you above the tree line, up where the larger bucks roam.   Because of the needed travel distance and steep terrain, we recommend that you be able to carry a 30 to 60 pound pack for 3 - 5 days.   This is one of the most scenic hunts that you'll find in Alaska.

If you are interested, I recommend an alpine lake fly-in for the additional $500/hunter. This extra cost covers the chartered floatplane costs. Here are some of the pros and cons of that option:

Pros - Increased elevation gain on the deer, getting you into the big buck areas with less effort. Less gear/weight to pack to the spike camps. Open terrain makes it easier to see the deer. More deer to see. Less chance of a wounded animal to escape. The lakes are more remote and you'll find the hunting is even better than the beach access hunts. Better scenery!

Cons - Cost. I can't think of too many other reasons not to. From the beach, the climb to the alpine is usually pretty tough especially if you are going overnight (recommended for the time of year that you'll be here). If you day hunt from the boat, you can get to the alpine, but usually only for a couple of hours then you need to go back down. The best hunting is in the mornings and evenings so you miss out on some of the good hunting.

During the late season, many of the bigger bucks can be found at lower elevations (less than 1,000 feet).   During this time of year, most hunting is usually done from boats and skiffs less than half a mile from the beach.
